Leizu: First Look at a Custom Head Sculpt with SEDOLL
The first renders of a head sculpt I have been developing with SEDOLL. It will be produced as a limited edition and sold only here.
This is early. What follows are sculpt renders rather than photographs, which means you are looking at digital geometry and not yet at silicone. I am posting them anyway, because the point where an idea stops being an idea is usually the most interesting stage and almost nobody shows it.
Where the face comes from
Leizu Zhang is the main character of an unfinished novel I have been writing. That is the origin, but it is not the reason she works as a sculpt.
The reason is restraint. High cheekbones with a soft transition into the jaw, natural brows, a mouth that sits slightly uneven at rest. Nothing about the face is exaggerated. Most head sculpts are designed to be striking, which is the easier brief. This one is designed to be believable, and believable is considerably harder to get right.
What you are actually looking at
Three stages, and they are easy to confuse if nobody points them out.
The grey renders without texture are the form pass. Proportion, bone structure, the transitions between planes, nothing else. Everything that matters structurally is decided at this stage, and no amount of surface detail added later will rescue a face that is wrong here.
The renders carrying visible pore detail are the texture pass. This is the point where a sculpt stops reading as a mannequin. Skin is not uniform, and the difference between convincing and not is whether pore density varies correctly between the nose, the cheek and the forehead. Getting that wrong in either direction, too smooth or too even, is what produces the plastic look most people cannot name but immediately notice.
The skin-toned renders with painted brows and eyes are a finish preview, not the finish. The real version will be hand-painted in silicone and it will look different, because paint on a physical surface always does.
The direction
Realism ahead of beauty, throughout. A bare face with no fashion makeup. The hand-painted work goes into the parts most people only register subconsciously: undereye depth, a natural flush at the cheeks, faint capillary detail at the nose. A face that looks like it required nothing.
The reference point is wax figure quality rather than doll aesthetic, which is an unusual brief to hand a manufacturer and the reason I wanted to work with SEDOLL's Master Makeup painters specifically. Whether we reach it is genuinely open. That is part of why I want to document the attempt rather than only the result.
Profile.
Everything is sculpted rather than reused, which is the part of a head sculpt that most often gives away a shortcut.
Edition and availability
The head will be produced as a limited edition of around thirty worldwide and sold exclusively through cruentis.art. An optional body from SEDOLL will be available alongside it.
Final photographs and the shop launch are roughly three to six months out. That estimate is honest rather than optimistic. Sculpting, tooling and a first paint test take as long as they take, and I would rather move the date than the standard.
Feel free to follow cruentis.art on Instagram, as there are more final photos coming soon.
This is the first of these. There will be more.

Frequently asked questions
What is a head sculpt?
The three dimensional model a silicone head is moulded from. It is built digitally first, then used to produce the physical mould, and every copy of that head carries the decisions made at this stage. Proportion and structure cannot be corrected afterwards.
Why hyper-realism rather than a doll aesthetic?
Most head sculpts are stylised, which avoids the uncanny valley by not attempting realism in the first place. Leizu attempts it. The brief is wax figure quality: a face that reads as a real person before it reads as beautiful, with restrained asymmetry, natural brow irregularity and visible skin texture.
What is Master Makeup?
SEDOLL's highest hand-painting standard. The detail is applied by hand: undereye depth, natural flush, capillary detail, individually placed freckles where specified. It is the reason this sculpt was designed around subtlety rather than around strong features.
How many will be made and where can I buy it?
Approximately thirty worldwide, sold exclusively through cruentis.art. An optional SEDOLL body will be offered alongside the head. The launch is expected in roughly three to six months, and announcements will be posted here first.
